Comprehensive Support for Vulnerable Populations: From Rescue to Recovery
Protection and essential psychosocial support of the war-affected population of Ukraine’s frontline regions

The EAST SOS regional teams provided assistance to people affected by the massive combined attack in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv.

On the night of June 2, the russian army attacked civilian infrastructure and residential neighborhoods in Ukrainian cities. The enemy used 73 missiles of various types and 653 drones. Kyiv was the main target of the attack: six people were killed in the capital, and another 79 were injured.

In Dnipro, at least 49 houses were damaged, seven of which were completely destroyed. Fifteen people were killed, including two children and a rescue worker who had arrived to eliminate the consequences of the attack. Another 40 people were injured, including four children.

Throughout the day, EAST SOS specialists worked at two locations in Dnipro. A psychologist provided 15 counseling sessions, helping people cope with acute stress after what they had experienced. Lawyers processed 52 requests related to submitting compensation applications under the eVidnovlennia program and entering data into the State Register of Property Rights. A social support specialist provided 11 consultations.

“Unfortunately, this spring our teams have been going to the sites of russian attacks several times a week. But the consequences of this attack were among the most devastating. Many people were in shock and needed different types of support – from psychological first aid to legal consultations,” said EAST SOS psychologist Nataliia Natina.

She said that among the people who turned to the team for help was a woman who lost her husband that same night – he sustained fatal injuries. He had only recently returned to his family from the frontline.

Because of the threat of repeated attacks, the specialists went down to shelters several times together with residents. Even then, they stayed close to the residents, helping people live through the first hours after the tragedy and find the strength for the next steps.

In Zaporizhzhia, at least 20 strikes damaged private homes, apartment buildings, and industrial and critical infrastructure facilities. Lawyers provided 4 consultations to people affected by the attack on compensation for damaged property, and a case manager referred one person to EAST SOS’s Zatyshno Space for legal and psychological support.

In Kharkiv Oblast, 14 people were injured as a result of russian attacks. A psychologist provided psychological first aid to 7 people, while a lawyer and a social support specialist provided 4 consultations each.
