Ten Evacuees Find New Home in Zhytomyr Oblast Through the Joint Efforts of East SOS and the Donetsk Oblast Military Administration
Due to constant Russian shelling, these people were forced to leave their homes and the comfort of their everyday lives, to save what is most precious – their lives.
Thanks to the close cooperation between the East SOS Charity Foundation and the Department of Social Protection of the Donetsk Oblast Military Administration, 10 evacuees from Sloviansk, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk, and the village of Matiasheve in Donetsk Oblast have found a safer place to live.
Four women were transported by an Ukrzaliznytsia evacuation train to the Zhytomyr geriatric nursing home, while another six individuals were safely relocated to the Berdychiv geriatric nursing home of the Zhytomyr Oblast Council.
All those rescued are older people and persons with disabilities between the ages of 63 and 88. The East SOS teams together with partners, helped them leave the frontline area.
The East SOS team arranged for their temporary accommodation at the Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities operated by NGO Ocean of Good in Dnipro. While waiting for further resettlement, they received psychosocial and legal support, as well as medical assistance.
One of those beginning a new chapter in life was 82-year-old Yevheniia. She survived several attacks that damaged her apartment in the city of Sloviansk. The decision to evacuate was the only way for her to save her life.
Sixty-three-year-old Valerii was also among those leaving for resettlement. The East SOS team evacuated him from Sloviansk together with his 85-year-old mother. He has used a wheelchair for more than 15 years following the amputation of both legs. He said that during attacks, they were unable even to get down to a shelter.
“When you go to bed, you don’t know whether you’ll be killed by a drone strike or a guided bomb. Maybe I could have held on a little longer, but both my health and my mother’s had worsened, while the shelling only grew more intense. I know that where we are going, there will be proper care and a daily routine. Right now, that is the best possible help for us.”
East SOS helps older people, persons with disabilities, families with children, and pet owners leave dangerous areas. We support people at every stage of the evacuation process – from departure and temporary accommodation to reunification with their loved ones.

Recently, we shared how East SOS and Ministry of Social Policy, Family and Unity of Ukraine provided access to long-term nursing care for 16 evacuees.
