Heating Points and Evacuation: Assistance to the Affected Population of Ukraine

The Vostok SOS Charitable Foundation’s monitoring missions help to identify and assess the current needs of vulnerable groups. We care about each person and strive to improve their living conditions.

Lately, we visited the shelter at a student dormitory in Kharkiv and talked to Maksym. With his wife and nine-year-old son, he was forced to leave Kupiansk, where he worked as a miller in a bakery.

“On February 24, 2022, I arrived at work, and my cousin called me from Kharkiv and said that the city was shelled and that war had broken out. I didn’t believe it at first, but then he showed me the explosions on video”, Maksym said.

On February 27, russians occupied Kupiansk. For some time, the man continued to work in a bakery that supplied his hometown and neighboring settlements. Residents of Vovchansk, Sviatohirsk, and other towns came to Kupiansk to buy bread. On September 10, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated Kupiansk, the city was under occupation for almost 200 days, and the enemy shelling did not stop.

In September, his family had to leave their home. They were given shelter in Kharkiv, and now the family needs food.

The father takes care of his son and does household chores, while the mother works as a nurse in a hospital. The family has a common hobby – knitting. Maksym’s wife has a YouTube channel with her works.

The monitoring was carried out within the framework of the project “Warm spots and winterization of evacuation efforts to assist the war-affected population in Ukraine” with the support of Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.
