Evacuation from Frontline Areas Is the First Step to Safety: What Awaits Older People and People with Disabilities After Evacuation
Every day, the East SOS team evacuates people from frontline hromadas in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. One of the greatest challenges after evacuation is finding places where people who require ongoing care due to their age, disability, or health condition can stay.
This journey – from evacuation to continued support – is the focus of a feature by Espreso TV.
Journalists visited the Social Adaptation Center for People with Disabilities by NGO Ocean of Kindness in Dnipro, where they spoke with our team, the center’s staff, and people who found temporary shelter there after being evacuated.
The feature tells the stories of people who were evacuated, including Tetiana from Chaplyne, who has had both legs amputated, and Yurii from Druzhkivka. After suffering a stroke, Yurii was unable to walk for 13 years, but rehabilitation at the center helped him get back on his feet.
At the center, evacuees receive shelter, meals, round-the-clock care, and rehabilitation. At the same time, the East SOS team helps them restore their documents and obtain the necessary certificates, accompanies them to hospitals and other institutions when needed as part of its social transportation service, provides psychological support, and helps find longer-term accommodation.
We provide support to people throughout the full evacuation process – from the initial request to finding accommodation and onward travel to next of kin.
