Protection and Psychosocial Services for People with Limited Mobility and Persons with Disabilities Affected by the War

East SOS is implementing a humanitarian assistance project with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The initiative covers Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts and will continue through the end of 2026.

The project is aimed at internally displaced people, with a particular focus on supporting elderly people and people with disabilities, including those who need assistance obtaining or restoring lost documents.

As part of the project, the East SOS team provides tailored support to evacuees from frontline hromadas (communities) who live alone and require assistance finding accommodation with supported living in safer regions of Ukraine.

These people are temporarily accommodated at the “Without Borders” shelter in Kharkiv, which we set up in partnership with NGO “Volunteer–68”, and the Social Adaptation Center for People with Disabilities by NGO “Ocean of Kindness”, as well as at the East SOS shelter on Nezlamna Street in Dnipro. As part of the project, evacuees staying at the Kharkiv shelter receive hot meals.

Psychological and social support team members from East SOS provide assistance in collective sites in Dnipro and across the region. They help people regain a sense of emotional stability, cope with the consequences of traumatic experiences, and address urgent social issues. In particular, they support people in restoring lost documents, undergoing medical examinations, and applying for pension and social benefits.

“Since 1 November 2024, we have been receiving direct funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). For us as a local organization, this is extremely valuable because during the project proposal development stage we are able to flexibly plan support for war-affected people based on identified needs. This allows us to support people during one of the most critical periods in their lives – while searching for permanent accommodation post-evacuation,” said Project Manager Liubov Skibchyk.

We continue supporting people so that even in difficult circumstances they have access to professional assistance and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

The activities are carried out within the project “Protection and Psychosocial Services for People with Limited Mobility and Persons with Disabilities Affected by the War”, implemented with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
