Compensation for Injuries Caused by Shelling: Support from East SOS
As shelling of civilian cities across Ukraine intensifies, more and more civilians are not only losing their homes and property but also suffering injuries. In the aftermath, many struggle to understand where to turn for support, how to restore documents, and how to access assistance for recovery.
One of the most challenging issues faced by those affected is obtaining compensation for injuries caused by shelling. Yurii Tyshchenko from Orikhiv went through this process with the support of the East SOS team.

On the night of December 31 to January 1 this year, he was caught in a russian shelling attack in his hometown. As a result, Yurii sustained severe injuries to his back and arm. He was rescued by law enforcement officers, who provided first aid and evacuated him to Zaporizhzhia.
At the regional hospital, he received necessary medical treatment and care during his recovery period. After being discharged, he was temporarily accommodated in a transit center in Zaporizhzhia. However, he soon found himself facing a new reality – without housing, documents, and essentially without means to survive.
At a moment when managing everything alone was overwhelming, the East SOS team stepped in to provide essential support.
First, we addressed basic needs: clothing, hygiene kit, and other essentials. Then our social workers and legal team assisted in restoring his passport and tax ID, opening a bank account, and arranging for his social benefits to be paid.
Later, the team supported Yurii through the complex process of applying for compensation for his injury. At this stage, we also helped restore the documents confirming his disability. He is now receiving state benefits in line with his health condition.
The East SOS teams regularly go to areas following shelling to support those affected. Our specialists provide psychological, social, and legal assistance, including support with processing documents, social benefits, and compensations.
