Protecting and Supporting At-Risk Communities in Eastern Ukraine: Multisectoral Humanitarian Assistance and Preparedness

Recently, East SOS assisted 9 evacuees from frontline settlements – Druzhkivka, Myrne, and Serhiivka (Donetsk region) and Pokrovske and Ukrainka (Dnipropetrovsk region) – who had been temporarily residing at the Center for Social Adaptation for People with Disabilities of the NGO “Ocean of Good” in Dnipro, to find new homes in Western Ukraine.

Thanks to cooperation with the Donetsk and Volyn Regional Military Administrations, Druzhkivka Military Administration, and the Ministry of Social Policy, Family, and Unity of Ukraine, three women were resettled in a residential care facility in the Volyn region.

Another man and two women found shelter in a residential care facility in Kalush (Ivano-Frankivsk region), while two women will live in the village of Stetseva (Ivano-Frankivsk region). In both locations, the East SOS team carried out repairs and equipped the premises with furniture and appliances. One woman was resettled in the village of Kraiiv (Rivne region).

Among them was 75-year-old Valentyna and her husband, whose house in the village of Myrne was completely destroyed by a russian drone. Initially, the couple was evacuated by East SOS partners to a hospital in Shakhtarske, Dnipropetrovsk region, and subsequently to a transit center in Pavlohrad. From there, our team assisted them in reaching the Center for Social Adaptation for People with Disabilities, of the NGO “Ocean of Good” in Dnipro. During this challenging journey, back in Shakhtarske, Valentyna found a small toy – a bunny – which she kept not only as a reminder of her long journey to safety but also as a talisman that gives her faith and hope.

Behind every story like Valentyna’s is daily systematic work. The East SOS team not only evacuates people from dangerous areas but also provides temporary and permanent accommodation, psychological and legal support, document restoration, and medical assistance for individuals with limited mobility.

You can sign up for evacuation by contacting the East SOS call center from Monday to Saturday (8 AM – 6 PM) at 0800 332 614.

The evacuation of civilians is carried out by East SOS as part of the project: “Protection and Support to Vulnerable Communities in Eastern Ukraine: Multisectoral Humanitarian Response and Preparedness”, with the support of ActionAid and funding from the European Commission for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).

In the autumn period, East SOS rescued 684 lives with the support of ECHO.
