Protection and Psychosocial Support for War-Affected Populations in Ukraine’s Frontline Regions

This is the third transit hub for people forced to flee their homes due to russian shelling. The Voloske center was established to support evacuees from the Dnipropetrovsk region and to reduce the load on the Pavlohrad center, which primarily receives residents of the Donetsk region.

Every day, evacuees from Prosiana, Pokrovske, Malomykhailivka, Hryhorivka and neighboring communities arrive at Voloske. The center now meets and helps almost 40 people daily.
The facility can accommodate 76 people, including 10 places adapted for people with limited mobility. In case of urgent need, it can expand to host up to 200 people. The premises are equipped with comfortable rooms and an elevator for transporting people with disabilities.

The center also includes a playroom for children and a social wardrobe, regularly replenished by charitable organizations. Support provided on site includes hot meals, hygiene kits, food packages, medical care, and financial and social support. East SOS team provides counseling and emotional stabilization.

“Psychologists support evacuees, lawyers advise on compensation for destroyed or damaged housing, inheritance, registration of property ownership, and applications under the eRecovery program. Social workers help restore documents, open bank accounts, and transfer pensions to cards. People in need of inpatient care but with nowhere to go are assisted with accommodation in temporary shelters in Dnipro,” said Liubomyr Drozd, Logistics Manager at the transit point.

All the evacuees share different life stories, but they are united by one thing: the war forced them to leave their homes.

“Recently, a mother of four children arrived at the transit point, with the youngest being only three weeks old. She told us that the shelling began the day after she gave birth, and she had to hide in the basement with her newborn. The family has now evacuated and is heading to their relatives in the Cherkasy region. Another story that deeply touched us is of an 86-year-old woman from Vyshneve village. To escape the daily GBU shelling, she and her family spent the night in a sunflower field. Bombs were falling directly onto the village streets, destroying houses. Risking everything, they fled with their two dogs, saving not only their own lives but also their pets,” shared Svitlana Kopanytsia, Psychologist at East SOS.

The East SOS team welcomes evacuees from the frontline areas at transit points in Pavlohrad, Voloske, and Lozova. Our team stays with people in their most critical moments – right after they leave areas under shelling, when they arrive exhausted, anxious, and uncertain about the future.

Support for evacuees is provided within the framework of the projects:
▫️ “Protection and Necessary Psychosocial Support for War-Affected Frontline Residents” with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office;
▫️ “Comprehensive Humanitarian Aid to Conflict-Affected Ukrainians and Third-Country Nationals in Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Moldova” with the support of Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe and funding from the German Federal Foreign Office.

Recently, we shared the story of assistance provided in Lozova, Kharkiv region.
