“Queue of Life” Moves Forward: Another 149 Evacuees from the Frontline Areas Find Permanent Shelter in Kyiv Oblast

Every day, hundreds of people have to flee frontline settlements in Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts, escaping relentless russian attacks. While awaiting permanent accommodation options, the team of the Charity Foundation “East SOS” is sheltering evacuees with reduced mobility in two facilities in the city of Dnipro — at the Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities run by NGO “Ocean of Kindness” and in our shelter on Nezlamna Street.
With a severe shortage of available accommodation places in geriatric care facilities, many people have to wait their turn for evacuation in the so-called “queue of life,” remaining exposed to danger.
Just days ago, one of the largest-scale relocations to permanent accommodation took place. With the support of the Government and the Office of the President of Ukraine, and in cooperation with the Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Department of Social Protection of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, available accommodation places were found for evacuees in geriatric care facilities in Kyiv Oblast.
On August 21 and 23, our team helped transport 149 people from shelters to evacuation trains. Among them were 68 people who had been waiting for a long time at the Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities run by NGO “Ocean of Kindness” and in our shelter on Nezlamna Street to be accommodated in permanent residential care facilities. These evacuees came from Pokrovsk, Rodynske, Bilytske, Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, Ivanivka, Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, and Kramatorsk.
“I stayed in the transit shelter for almost 3 months. My granddaughter persuaded me to evacuate from Sloviansk, since it is difficult for me to walk on my own. It was scary to leave for the unknown, but staying was even scarier, as there were constant attacks and houses burning all around. I only hope for the best,” recalled 85-year-old Mrs. Oleksandra.
Every place that becomes available is an opportunity for our crews to evacuate the next people and move forward the queue of those still waiting to flee danger.
The pace of evacuations is increasing, and the number of requests to our Foundation’s call center continues to grow daily. We are constantly seeking new accommodation options: in geriatric homes and municipal shelters, through cooperation with communities, and by helping to adapt facilities to the needs of people with reduced mobility. Yet, such accommodation places are critically lacking each time.
We continue our mission to save lives. We are grateful to our steadfast partner, Ukrzaliznytsia, for their support — together we help people journey countless kilometers toward a safer future.
The Charity Foundation “East SOS” offers free-of-charge evacuation from frontline areas to everyone in need — people with disabilities, families with children, as well as pet owners. We accompany people during evacuation, help with temporary shelter, accommodation in residential care institutions, or safe travel to their relatives.
