In December 2025, the East SOS team conducted three group practices for teenagers and young people in the Smyha community, Rivne region. The sessions were based on the methodology of the practical manual “I Can”, and evolved into a space for sincere conversations, productive interaction, and creative self-discovery.

When working with young people, it is essential to create an environment free from judgment and prejudice, where they can openly discuss themselves, their emotions, and their needs. A sense of acceptance and attentiveness makes it easier for participants to name difficult feelings and understand that they are not alone. This approach guided all the meetings in December.

One of the practices took place at the Dubno branch of the Open International University of Human Development “Ukraine”, bringing together students. Participants reflected not only on their own emotions and needs, but also on what is missing in student life and how to collaborate on ideas to better align the educational process with the real needs of young people. Through dialogue and practical exercises, the sessions fostered openness, mutual understanding, and trust – a crucial step in building strong connections between students and teachers.

Another meeting was held at the Keneberg Youth Center, where students learned step by step to recognize their emotions, listen to themselves and others, and choose words instead of harsh reactions to build positive relationships. The group concluded the session by watching a Christmas movie and reflecting on support – how to care for themselves and be present for their loved ones.

A special event on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, titled “The Light Given by Children”, brought together teenagers and children with disabilities from different villages. Participants took part in a master class on woodblock printing, an ancient Ukrainian craft of hand-printing on fabric, led by craftswoman Vitka Kuzmych. The creative session created a shared space of acceptance and attentiveness, where children with diverse life experiences connected through collaborative work.

Each December meeting was unique, but all were united by live interaction, dialogue, and creativity. Youth practiced discussing themselves, listening to one another, and negotiating, gaining skills they will carry into their studies, daily communication, and relationships with family and friends.

The events were part of the project “Empowering Civil Society for Nonviolent Conflict Transformation with State Actors” with the financial support of KURVE Wustrow.

Recently, East SOS also held a two-day hackathon for teenagers.
