Protection and Psychosocial Support for War-Affected Populations in Ukraine’s Frontline Regions

The project aims to support war-affected individuals by providing individual consultations with psychosocial and legal specialists, professional development opportunities through courses, trainings, and workshops, events promoting social adaptation and emotional recovery. These activities take place in safe and welcoming environments known as Zatyshno Spaces, as well as through mobile psychosocial and legal support teams operating in the Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.

Events

Two days of powerful conversations, practical knowledge, and community — this was InformFest: “It’s Time”, held in Zaporizhzhia on November 5–6, 2024.

The event brought together over 250 participants for intense discussions on socially important topics, skill-building sessions, and meaningful networking.

InformFest was organized by a group of inspiring women taking part in the Women Lead in Emergencies leadership development initiative, implemented with the support of the East SOS Charity Foundation.

On November 2, 2024, women leaders of Mykolaiv held a financial literacy workshop with the support of the East SOS Charity Foundation. The event was organized by an initiative group of women who graduated from the Women’s Leadership Development Program based at the Zatyshno Space safe space. The workshop brought together 32 participants—women who are taking their first steps toward leadership and financial independence.

Our Team

The team offers free support services aimed at reducing anxiety, combating gender-based violence, and helping individuals adapt to new living conditions. They assist with document restoration, applications for social benefits, and provide both individual and group counseling. The team also organizes children’s activities and other psychosocial support events—all at no cost to participants.

History

2022

In March, the East SOS call center team received hundreds of calls from women requesting evacuation, psychosocial support, and legal assistance. Recognizing the urgent need, we decided to create the Zatyshno Space network—a warm and safe place for those affected by the war. Beyond regular activities, visitors at Zatyshno Spaces connect with one another, engage in meaningful activities, socialize, and involve children in thematic meetings that foster healing and community building. Thanks to the support of international partners, the first Zatyshno Space was opened in Cherkasy.

2023

With the support of international donors, we opened Zatyshno Space safe spaces in Kropyvnytskyi, Khust, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa. The spaces regularly hosted psychological support events and organized day camps for young people, offering activities such as quests, games, socializing, and communication-building exercises.

During the first year, more than 5,000 women visited the spaces, with around 80% of them having fled their homes due to the full-scale war.

2024 – дотепер

Since the beginning of the year, seven Zatyshno Space locations have continued their work. Starting in May, teams have been actively providing support at centers in Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Kropyvnytskyi, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, and Zaporizhzhia. The spaces regularly host events aimed at improving the psychological well-being of women and children.

Children are deeply sensitive to the challenges of war, and coping with its consequences is extremely difficult for them. One of the most important ways to help is to create a safe and supportive environment where they feel protected. It is crucial to give children the opportunity to express their feelings and emotions freely.
